High power laser diodes
Wednesday, November 29, 2006, 07:05 PM - Robotics
Roithner in Germany sells all kinds of laser diodes, laser diode drivers, optics, etc. In particular, they sell high-power infrared laser diodes that could be adequate for a CNC laser foam cutting machine. A 500mW 808nm diode costs about $40, and a 1W costs about $100.

CNC kits from Xylotex
Saturday, November 25, 2006, 05:15 PM - Robotics
Xylotex is selling stepper motor controller boards. They also sell stepper motors, but it seems to me that they are cheaper at Jameco.

They are much more expensive than the kits from HobbyCNC (unassembled) that my dad bought. His intent is to build a 4 axes CNC machine to cut foam (for building airplane wings and such).

Software development tools for the ARM on Linux
Saturday, November 25, 2006, 05:06 PM - Robotics
Rowley Associates in the UK offers software development suites for various microcontrolers, including the ARM. It costs $149 for the "personal" version, and is available for Linux.

I have been using Keil's ARM development tools, which has a free limited version. Keil's tools are not available on Linux, but I find they run fine under Wine (Windows emulator for Linux).

LinuxDevices has an article about the new Sony Mylo, a hand-held computer running Linux/Qtopia with Wifi, music and video playback, Skype, etc...

The interesting thing is the Freescale i.MX21
around which the Mylo is built. It has a lot of interesting features for embedded robotics applications.
